Shadow Works is born from
passion and empirical knowledge of musical reproduction.
Audiophile means a person having an ardent interest in
the highest fidelity sound reproduction. With a Shadow
Works dynamic woofer you can be sure this is our goal
aim regardless of cost and difficulty in engineering,
What we have developed by listening and testing is range
of speakers with specific tonal characteristics that all
speakers have, called the sonic signature.
This is what life is really all about, No two persons
sense are the same so how could any company make one single
subwoofer for everyone? its not possible for one woofer
to be all things to all ears and minds in a world with
unique people and unique taste.
The sub infra-range of music travels the furthest and
has the most impact on a persons senses and this is what
we understand best.
Subwoofers or Infra-woofers as we term our drivers have
a sonic force that can accurately reproduce the grandest
orchestral drums to the most advanced electronic artificial
bass tones.

The Original Subwoofer is the Infrawoofer.
If you refer to the Professional Audio Reference guide, they
quote in their technical dictionary.
"Subwoofer A large woofer loudspeaker designed to reproduce
audio's very bottom-end, i.e., approximately the last one or
two octaves, from 20 Hz to 80-100 Hz"
"Actually misnamed since subsonic means slower than audio,
while infrasonic means lower than audio, it should be called
an "Infrawoofer."
Subwoofer is a misnomer, unfortunately used by 99% of the world
and actually means "No Sound" as there is nothing
beneath sound or 0Hz. Anybody that has decades of engineering
from designing speakers will know this as correct if obscure,
as most truths are.
Making a special low frequency Infrawoofer with high output
and high stability is made by testing hundreds of materials,
thousands of hours of testing, a lot of material science but
the most important part is listening and making notes. We have
worked with Dymension Productions in their advanced music studios
for sound testing and calibrating each design from the early
80's to the present day, there studio rooms are perfect for
our anechoic chamber requirements and A B blind test's/
The human ear is the only instrument that matters in the end
and this is what our ears and psychoacoustic senses are trained
for.
Sonic Signature
Every transducer we make has its own sound quality, from ultra
tight high intensity to tectonic deep bass waves, everybody
has their own taste which we recognize and respect. People are
individuals and so are our woofers. Shadow Works do not push
one character over other, we merely create a driver and its
for you to know what tonal value and characteristic of sound
you enjoy, there should be no tonal value from an ideal drive
unit but in reality this is never the case, every single driver
in the world has its on aura or sonic signature.
Lets put it like this, most of us have a favourite song, now
if that artist makes a song famous, it becomes the definitive
version and anybody else trying to sing that song will come
close but can never equal its original quality. The same can
be said for speakers, the degree is far more subtle but it does
exist.
All speakers are very different, they have their own special
characteristics, to this end we say no speaker is bad, they
have their own character and its not scientific or helpful to
say something sounds rubbish. These are terms used by arrogant
listeners that believe they have the audio fountain of truth
in there Hi-fi's.
The best speakers systems in the world have the best enclosures
which are designed around them, plus the best amplifiers and
source units in the world which make a very strong system. The
result; a great drive unit is nothing without its enclosure
and a great enclosure is nothing with out a great drive unit.
Good musical recordings mean good music quality.
Dark, smooth, tight, deep, wobble, hard, spaced, bright, fast,
dry, focused, glossy and alive;
These are some of the basic characteristics of sound quality
that people use to describe the music or sound from their speakers
which comes from the drive units ability to follow the musical
signal. If your music is of a poor recording or is not well
made no matter how good the speakers or amplifiers, the music
will always be poor quality. Always have the cleanest highest
fidelity signal possible from your CD to your Amplifier to your
speakers, this will reward you with great performance of your
favourite music.
Every one of our woofers has a combination of characters, that
is their sonic signature and will change the way your favourite
music sounds. They will all sound great but they will sound
different. It is up to you to choose what tonal bass sound you
enjoy, there is no right or wrong answer, we basically have
a bass box of chocolates, and you can take your pick of what
ever you love and enjoy.
We normally recommend sealed enclosures but any well made enclosure
well do from transmission line open dipole and URPS system are
great for a highly consistent quality of bass.
The Truth is in the wire.
Audiophiles are about musical accuracy and truth, getting as
close to what the musicians played when the music was recorded
by the sound engineers. Microphones in reverse basically. It
was put to me once like this by a sound engineer of some 60
years " If the sound is not in the wire! it's not accurate"
so its not the truth. We make advanced transducers for this
purpose that have zest and fire in their performance.
"Reality is as much in the subtext and background as in
the foreground and foretext, and to truly live, one must be
able to see, hear, and sense both, from the inside and the outside
of one's self."
